In order to reach a wide audience at all levels of society and initiate a public discussion, the documentary screenings will be accompanied by health education trainings in five regions of Armenia in order to address reproductive health misconceptions and stereotypes. Ultimately, the project aims to accelerate amendments to the Law on Reproductive Health and Rights that would increase regulatory supervision of doctors performing abortions by enlisting the support of informed citizens that have the power to shape the decisions of policy makers and get the issue of sex-selective abortions onto the agenda of legislators

    Purpose:

The project aims to break the culture of silence by creating a healthy atmosphere for public discussions surrounding such issues as domestic violence, trafficking, sexual assault, etc. Invoking the alarming data from the UNFPA’s 2008-2010 Nationwide Survey on Domestic Violence against Women and 2009-2010 PROMEDIA-GENDER NGO’s research Issue of Gender-Based Violence as Presented by Armenian Mass Media, the applicant effectively argues that the broadcast and print media further exacerbates this atmosphere of fear and silence since it fails to address accurately gender-based violence stories and the issues of gender inequality in general are consistently overlooked. This project is designed to create a safe platform for open and healthy discussions on women’s rights and gender-based violence issues. The applicant envisages raising awareness on these issues through the following means: localizing the “Real Life Read” slug that covers stories of real women dealing with domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, unhealthy relationships, etc., and provides advice to women and girls how to avoid or handle similar situations; placing 1-3 social advertisements in each issue, which can be either an advertorial articles on various campaigns by local women’s rights NGOs or image commercials; starting an online article series on empowered and successful women and launching a new slug about local stories on violence in relationships and in family with the tips on how to overcome them both from the women’s rights and legal perspectives

Tufenkian Foundation (TF) in cooperation with Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is concerned with combating gender stereotypes and misconceptions on a grass-root level and changing attitudes in the mass base in order to tackle the issue of gender-based violence. The project seeks to focus on community-level awareness raising on women’s issues and empowerment of women with knowledge about healthy relationships based on partnership rather than control. It intends to challenge patriarchal narratives and shape opinions and perceptions through evidence-based campaigning. For that matter, the project takes as its starting point the need for a comprehensive study on gender roles and healthy relationship perceptions amongst the young people born or educated post 1991. The second phase of the project envisages grass-root awareness raising campaigns (for 500 participants in 6 locations) such as round table discussions, traveling exhibits (by Sara Anjargolian) and video competition, which based on the results of the study will address common misconceptions, stereotypes, and myths. The third phase will focus on bringing together empowered women in each community to establish a Coalition of Women Activists that will carry on advocacy activities on specific topics relevant for their communities. Tufenkian's second project entitled "Capacity Building for Social Movements in Armenia" aims to assist social movements in Armenia in the process of increasing their transparency and improving outreach through support to development of a communication strategy. The project covers production, publication and dissemination of awareness raising, outreach materials and PSAs on environmental issues
